Today we took a terrarium-making class at The Palm Room in Ballard, the best plant and garden store ever. We had saved these two awesome empty bottles with corks from Woodinville Whiskey that we brought along to plant as well, so we ended up with four terrariums.

I also recently happened upon a Lions Valley studio pottery cat planter on Etsy by David Stewart, a popular mid century ceramics artist. I couldn't pass the planter up, I had to have him. I mean, look at him. He arrived last week, so I brought him along too to find the perfect little air plants (tillandsia) to live in his back. Everyone that saw him loved him. Look at that face! Second only to a real cat.

bird's nest fern

Some pictures from this weekend's trip to Pike Place Market, and one of our new plants newly planted (bird's nest fern).

I'm getting a thyroid scan this Friday, prior to which I need to observe a low-iodine diet for one week (in addition to getting some other fun things like thyroid-stimulating injections and taking a radioactive iodine pill). Iodine is in pretty much everything (all dairy, all soy, all seafood, anything processed in any way) so we've been having to cook a lot of vegetable-heavy stuff from scratch using kosher non-iodized salt. Looking forward to wrapping up this week of medical fun so I can start eating normally again Friday afternoon. At least I can still drink beer and wine!

Autumn in Seattle. We bought some plants at The Palm Room last weekend, crossing the Ballard Bridge and seeing some nice autumnal foliage and moss-covered sidewalks.

We went to Volunteer Park Cafe today and then wandered around the park itself -- Volunteer Park Conservatory was awesome, highly recommended! Yet more pictures on Flickr.
